Alt Ed Week January 4, 2012

Happy New Year – Please let me be the first to welcome you back as we begin classes immediately tomorrow, Wednesday, January 4, 2012! New Start enjoys the beginning of a new Session (Session 4 (Green)) and CHOICE looks to finish up First Semester this month.

The Week Ahead:
In education we know the importance of consistency for the ongoing connections with our students. Unfortunately (though good for us), long holiday breaks tend to disrupt the relationships we work so hard to build with our kids. This week I am asking you to treat our first few days back as you would Fall Opening. Take time to reconnect with your students and catch up with them relationally. We know that hitting books hard, and heavy lesson plans, within minutes of returning from a long break is not very effective practice. Take a day, or at least a few periods to let yourself, and the kids, ramp up to speed. Then, let the learning begin!

Tech Note:
Our new district websites have been released today. Highline Public Schools is now located at www.highlineschools.org . During transition, if users go to the former http://www.hsd401.org/ they will be redirected to the new site. I encourage you to take a few minutes and get familiar with the new look and feel of this site. It is organized much differently than the earlier site.

There is a tab in the top left of the page that allows users to go to “schools”, if you go there you can pick your location’s site. At both CHOICE and New Start, you will find links to a very basic site. We need to do some work here. I like that to get directly to school sites (or send someone there) simply put a forward slash /”name of school” right after the “.org” part. Our school links look like this:
www.highlineschools.org/newstart
www.highlineschools.org/choice

Please give the new sites a whirl and send me some feedback I can pass along to the district. Obviously, we need to flesh the sites out a bit also. So please send me ideas on that too! My hope is we can have a guru or two at each location so we won’t have to rely on the district to make changes. But for now, they are ready to help us establish a clean and professional looking site.

Friday PCT: PBIS Tier II Kick Off
The purpose of this week’s group (both sites) PCT is to inform all staff about the purpose and procedures of Tier II interventions for PBIS. We are doing this so we may implement at both sites with fidelity. That means everyone understands it, gets it, and we all move forward together with best intent and aligned in our vision. Please report to New Start (Salmon Creek) library to enjoy our newest smart board and presentations about Tier II for PBIS. There will be site work time provided for New Start and CHOICE staffs to work separately.  PCT Friday is January 6, 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the New Start Library
