What a weekend. Friday night was quite an extravaganza of teaching celebration. As you know our own Beverly Mowrer was front and center in a series of high level awards given by the Golden Apple commission. Friday night the ceremony was taped live in front of nearly 500 people at the Intiman Theater at Seattle Center.
Beverly received the “Big” Golden Apple, the Stanley O’McNaughton Award, along with colleagues from around the state. All committed teaching professionals who are doing remarkable things for kids. The show was hosted by KCTS Local Journalist/Celebrity Enrique Cerna and guest speakers included Eric Lieu, Randy Dorn and Stanley McNaughton (the son of the award’s namesake). In addition the Golden Apple winners, several schools and programs were recognized for excellence in education across our state. Each individual and program was profiled in a short![]() |

video and punctuated with a few words from recipients. The show will air on PBS on March 1. With supporting students and (nearly whole towns it seemed) the evening was one for the books akin to the Oscars for film. (Dare I say a “Super Bowl “, of sorts, or more accurately a Pro-Bowl for teaching, in regard to this weekend)
Thank you to all who came to support from the Highline Schools Foundation, the HEA, District Administrators, staff, family and students for our own New Start High School. It was a wonderful and inspiring evening for all.Bravo Zulu!
Work in schools is notorious for the unexpected and odd situations that occur without warning. “The unexpected” comes with the territory in classrooms to daily school operations. This week’s Bravo Zulu goes to Ann Carlson and Andrea Love who - in a moment’s notice - rescued a teacher and ten students who were stranded at the White Center Food Bank! Our students walk to the Food Bank from New Start and their escorting teacher was suddenly unavailable (minor injury) to bring them back last week. After a desperate phone call and some quick coordination by Jackie Miller and our office team, Andrea Love gallantly raced to the food bank to save our injured teacher, and Ann Carlson escorted the stranded students back to school on foot. All of which is completely out of the scope of both Andrea and Ann’s job description, yet, reflects their commitment and dedication for our kids (and each other). Bravo Zulu Andrea and Ann for saving that class! Well done, and thank you. Instructional Note: In Class Assessments
As I am finishing up some informative mid-year meetings this week, my next few Instructional notes will be reminders for your upcoming second-round observations. These will mostly occur in March. Meetings with each of you have been inspiring and I look forward to seeing some great teaching ahead.
As you prepare your plan for me, think about (and write down) what assessments I will see in the class I am observing. As many of you told me in our conversations, I can expect to see simple quizzes and exit tasks. Entry activities and even slate responses flashed on mini-white boards will be observed throughout the course of your periods. I will see circulating among groups, monitoring student talk and sit-down conferring between you and individual students.
There are many forms of on-going assessments to be carried out as you conduct your classroom of learners. Identify those explicitly and plan them into your lesson. Doing so will help you be more thoughtful (and strategic) about how you use formative assessment for your student. In the lesson plan you turn-in, I will look for how you will be gauging our students learning and adjusting your teaching accordingly.
